MENDOCINO COUNTY, Calif. -- The California Highway Patrol has arrested a news photographer on suspicion of trespassing after he entered state property to take pictures of protesters opposing the construction of a Highway 101 bypass in Mendocino County.

Steve Eberhard, a photographer for the Willits News, was arrested Tuesday.
The CHP says CalTrans allows media access to the construction site if the journalist is escorted.

The Willits News says Eberhard left a message with CalTrans requesting an escort before going to photograph protesters chaining themselves to machinery but never heard back.
