All hope appears lost after a massive mudslide destroyed an entire village in northeastern Afghanistan.

The death toll jumped overnight to more than 21-hundred, but it's feared it could be as high as 27-hundred.

The exact number of victims, however, may never be known as authorities announced today that they've stopped trying to dig through the hundreds of feet of mud.

NATO-led coalition troops were at the ready to help but say they never received a request.

Instead, the site will now be declared a mass grave.
