If not Sacramento, maybe Elk Grove will land a Major League Soccer franchise.

The Elk Grove City Council is going ahead with the purchase of 100-acres of farmland on the South side of the city along Grant Line Road.

The city has been working with a group headed by former State Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez which is trying to land an MLS franchise.

The land approved for purchase, which sits between Bradshaw Road and Highway 99, is expected to cost the city close to $6 million dollars to come out of the storm-water drainage fund.

It'll take 10 years to pay back the loan which will also be used to study alternative uses for the property if soccer doesn't workout.
