Elk Grove Police are warning the public about a man who's been trying to get teens to get into his vehicle.

Officer Chris Trim said that, at least four times this month, the man has approached both boys and girls, between the ages of 13 and 15, trying to start a conversation.

His description of the most recent report was one that could have ended up a lot different,

"The boy thought he looked like somebody he knew from a family friend, but then realized it wasn't.  Then after the conversation began he knew this guy was not right and took of and contacted law enforcement."

Officer Trim says each time the teens did the right thing, running away and not talking to the suspect, who is described as a black man in his 30s or 40s, heavy-set, with short hair.

The vehicles were a yellow or copper compact 4-door, and a full-sized silver van.  Trim said they are taking several steps in precaution,

"We're actually working with the Elk Grove Unified School District, and we've increased our presence in that area, just to make sure we can identify this guy, and stop him from taking this to a different level."

As far as the motive behind the attempts, Trim says they're just playing it safe,

"We're not sure what this gentleman's intent is, and so we just wanna make sure that we alert the community."

Anyone with information is urged to call Elk Grove Police, or Crime Alert at 443-HELP.
