Republican Senator Proposes Tougher Penalties for Bribery

California State Senators are coming together in an effort to toughen penalties for bribery.

Republican Sen. Mike Morrell says legislators should be held to higher standards.

"We're proposing zero tolerance legislation that would double criminal penalties for bribes or selling of oaths," Morrell said.

As for similar legislation being worked on by the Democrats, Morrell says Republicans are "concerned our friends across the aisle are only bringing forward window dressing solutions," he said.

This is the result of Democratic Senators Leland Yee, Roderick Wright and Ron Calderon being suspended earlier this year because of their legal troubles.
