Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has given money to the Sacramento Police Department for the purchase and training of a new police dog.

"Big Ben is a big fan of dogs and he has a grant where he gives out money to purchase service dogs," Sgt. Steve Olivera, who runs the K9 unit, said.

Olivera says they were given $10,000 for "Rex," a 17-month-old Belgian Malinois that will go to a veteran officer.

"He is replacing one of our retired dogs. So currently we are at nine," he said.

Roethlisberger's foundation gives out money for canines in cities near where the Steelers play away games. They were in Oakland last Sunday.
