SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- San Francisco 49ers' Quarterback Colin Kaepernick, linebacker Patrick Willis, and defensive tackle Justin Smith are team captains for the new season.

The "Bay Area News Group" says the three will represent the offense and defense respectively as elected by their teammates.

Team captaincy is a two-year term and Smith is in the second year of his current term, while Willis has been re-elected to another two-year term.

Kaepernick is beginning his first full season as the team's starter as former quarterback Alex Smith was a team captain last year.
