The new sports team in town is doing well.

The Sacramento Business Journal reports Sacramento Republic FC, the region's new United Soccer League professional team, has raised nearly $1.6 million dollars so far in investments.

Disclosures with the Securities and Exchange Commission show the soccer club has raised that amount as of Tuesday. They are hoping to raise $2-point-9 million for the start up.

Republic FC starts its season in March at Hughes Stadium at Sac City College.

The club was founded by sports entrepreneur Warren Smith, who helped bring the River Cats to the region.
