It's a holiday rush for insurance. Customers are flocking to the state's health exchange ahead of an approaching deadline.

Over the first couple of days of last week, about 15,000 people per day were signing up with Covered California.

"December 23rd is a new red letter day," Executive Director of Peter Lee said.

Lee says if you don't enroll by then you won't have coverage that starts on the first of the year.

"You'll still have three months of open enrollment but we want to get as many people as possible getting the benefit of this coverage," Lee said.

The first premiums will then be due Jan. 6.

Lee says the state exchanges are proving successful. More people have enrolled in California, Connecticut, Kentucky, New York and Washington than are covered by the federal exchange, which had a rocky launch.
