An 11-year-old Italian boy and his parents are dead after falling into a crater on the Solfatara volcano near Naples, according to the BBC.

Authorities say the family was visiting the popular tourist attraction when the boy wandered into a restricted area and fell into a 10-foot hole of boiling mud.

His parents tried to save him, but they also fell in and died.

The couple's other son, a seven-year-old, did not fall in and was turned over to his grandparents. The local mayor said it's the worst tragedy he's ever seen.
