The apes still rule the box office. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes fended off three new releases to remain the number-one movie in the country with $36 million over the weekend. The big-budget sequel has earned $139 million in 10 days.


The Purge: Anarchy had a strong debut, landing in second with $28.1 million. The horror/thriller's budget was a minuscule $9 million. The animated Planes: Fire & Rescue premiered in third with $18 million. The Jason Segel - Cameron Diaz comedy Sex Tape failed to excite audiences, opening in fourth with only $15 million. Transformers: Age of Extinction dropped from second to fifth with $10 million. That raises its total to $227 million.
