Tumbleweeds Engulf Homes In Southern California

High winds have left a California desert town buried in tumbleweeds. Residents of Victorville, which is northeast of Los Angeles were shocked when hundreds of tumbleweeds blew into their town, burying everything in their wake, including 150 homes. There were so many weeds that they reached the second story of some of the houses.

Video captured and posted to YouTube showed massive piles of the weeds blowing through the town, completely covering some homes as clean-up crews worked to remove the tumbleweed.

Multiple people called 911 to report the invasion of the prickly plants, according to the Daily Press.

“We have received several calls and we’re aware of the problems with tumbleweeds there, primarily in Mesa Street area,” Victorville spokeswoman Sue Jones told the Daily Press. “We’re not exactly sure how many homes are affected, but we’re estimating about 100 to 150 homes in that area.”

The weeds appeared to be contained to one neighborhood which is near Highway 395. The tumbleweeds were blown in from the desert, where winds were gusting upwards of 60 miles per hour.

The San Bernardino County Fire Department sent crews to assist the city's Public Works, Code Enforcement and Community Services divisions in cleaning up the mess and "allow residents safe access to their homes."

“The primary goal is to clear the front of the houses, to remove the tumbleweeds in order to allow residents safe access to their homes,” said Jones, who noted that the crews would be working overtime into the evening.
