More People Are Using Dates Just For 'Foodie Calls' - Have You Done This?

When you go on a bad date it isn’t uncommon for people to say to you, “well, at least you got a free meal out of it,” and it turns out for some folks, that was the whole point. Apparently more and more people are enjoying so-called “Foodie Calls,” meaning they are going out with someone just so they can snag a great meal at a fancy place.

New Yorker Olivia Balsinger has no shame in admitting she’s used guys for a good meal, noting that while she loves eating out, with paying such high rents in Manhattan, “I barely had enough money to go to a nice grocery store.” So she started seeking out men on dating apps specifically because they looked successful and “lonely,” which suggested they would be more than happy to pay for a good meal, which has resulted in her dining in some high-end New York places.

And Olivia isn’t the only one. In fact, a recent millennial survey found that 44% of young women admit they went out with a guy even though they weren’t attracted to them “because why not, it’s a free meal.”

And it’s not just women. A 26-year-old publicist named Alex Blynn has also gone on dates with men based on whether he thinks they can pick up the tab. “There are a lot of places to eat, but my budget doesn’t always allow me to try them,” he says. “A great way to supplement [my budget] is to go on a first date even if I’m not personally feeling it.” Of course sometimes that free meal can turn into something more. Back in 2015 Blynn met a guy who took him to a fancy restaurant in Tribeca and wound up dating him for a year.

  • On the other side, if you’re worried a date may be using you just for a meal there is a simple way to solve that problem. Balsinger says all they need to do is suggest a cheap date and see how the person reacts. If they are quick to say no, they’re probably using you for the food.
