Mathew Knowles opened up about his breast cancer diagnosis on Good Morning America. He said that he and his wife, Gena, noticed a recurring dot of blood on his shirts and on their sheets.
When he contacted his doctor, he got an exam and found out what was going on.
Knowles’ first call was to his daughters,Beyoncé andSolange, and his ex,Tina Knowles-Lawson. “This is genetics,” he toldMichael Strahan. “It also means that my kids have a higher chance, a higher risk. Even my grandkids have a higher risk. They handled it like they should — they went on and got the test.” He got treated over the summer. In addition, he gave up liquor and took up exercise. “I just wanted to have a clean bill of health,” he explained.
Mathew said that he’s telling his story in hopes that more men – especially Black men – will be aware and get tested. The key, he said, is early detection.
