Janet Jackson and the Roots’ Cute Classroom-Instruments Cover of ‘Runaway’

Janet Jackson Celebrates Park Theater Residency Debut With "Metamorphosis" After Party At On The Record

Janet Jackson joined the Roots and Jimmy Fallon for a classroom instruments cover of her hit song, “Runaway,” and Miss Jackson made a small but very important change to the song lyrics.

The lyric, "I woke up with an Australian breeze / and danced the dance with Aborigines" was changed to “and danced the dance with Indigenous peeps," because calling Australian indigenous people “Aborigines” is deemed insensitive and racist as it refers to Australia’s colonial past, and lumps people with diverse backgrounds into a single group.

This may be the first time Janet has sang the song to include the lyric change, she has been heard singing the old lyric as recently as 2018.
