Elk Grove Unified School District Cancels Classes Due to Coronavirus

The Elk Grove Unified School District announced that they would be canceling classes for the next week, after a family from the school district was asked to quarantine for possible exposure to COVID-19. That family is currently under quarantine.

Elk Grove Unified schools and any school related activities will be cancelled from March 7 to March 13. District officials said on Saturday that an update on whether the cancellations will be extended past March 13 is expected to come on Thursday, March 12, before the end of the day.

No student or staff member had tested positive for the coronavirus, according to the district.

Shortly after the EGUSD announcement on Saturday the Sacramento County Office of Education and the Sacramento County Public Health Department issued a joint statement in response. They noted that federal, state, and county officials have been coordinating their efforts since the COVID-19 virus appeared, and that local school districts and the public should keep in mind that, to date, there are no diagnosed cases of novel coronavirus involving students or school staff in Sacramento County.

However, SCOE and SCPHD also said that they respect the decision of the EGUSD to move up their spring break to allow them time to work with SCPH to fully understand their situation and we will support them in this effort.
