While it may be hard to get a good workout in when your stomach is grumbling, a new report suggests that really is the best way to exercise if you want to see results. A study out of the University of Bath suggests that if you want to maximize your work out go to the gym hungry.
The study claims that if you work out after having a full meal, your body becomes too concerned with the food you’ve just eaten and won’t focus on burning calories. This means the body won’t hone in on tackling adipose tissue, which can cause obesity. Instead, it takes its energy from the consumed carbohydrates, which isn’t the fat people want to shift when they work out
Instead, if you go to the gym hungry, the body can focus on burning fat and turning it into muscle. Study author Dylan Thompson explains, “This means that exercise in a fasted state might provoke more favorable changes in adipose tissue, and this could be beneficial for health in the long term.”
