Quentin Tarantino is speaking out about Uma Thurman's car crash on the set of Kill Bill and says that although he is "guilty" of getting her into the car, he didn't do it knowing that she would crash into a tree.
Thurman had said in an interview with The New York Times that Tarantino forced her to get into an unsafe car which she eventually crashed into a tree, injuring her neck and knees. She added that the director wouldn't even let her see the footage of the crash. Tarantino spoke about the incident Monday in an interview with Deadline and said, "It’s the biggest regret of my life, getting her to do that stunt." He said he also sent her the video of the crash to offer "closure" and "help her with her memory of the incident."
Tarantino says the scene was only supposed to be a driving sequence and wasn't a stunt. He remembers Thurman having some trepidation about the car, but he never believed there was anything to worry about. He admitted, "As a director, you learn things and sometimes you learn through horrendous mistakes. That was one of my most horrendous mistakes, that I didn’t take the time to run the road, one more time, just to see what I would see. And she crashed. After the crash, when Uma went to the hospital, I was feeling in total anguish at what had happened."
Tarantino says his relationship with Thurman was never the same after the incident. Thurman has since clarified the remarks she made in her New York Times interview and says she doesn't blame Tarantino for the crash. She hold the movie executives, including Harvey Weinstein responsible.
