“Crazy Rich Asians” Poised To Rule Weekend Box Office

“The Meg” may have debuted in the top spot over the weekend, but it could meet its match with Warner Bros’ “Crazy Rich Asians." A mixture of girl power and general excitement are shaping the film up to be a smash hit in the box office.

“The advance ticket sales for ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ are among the best we’ve seen for any comedy this summer,” says Fandango honcho Erik David, adding that the romantic-comedy film fits in with the type people usually come back to see more than once. That’s not all, director Jon M. Chu’s film is expected to easily gross $30 million for its debut. It could even take “The Meg’s” top spot.

It looks like “Crazy Rich Asians” partly has girl power to thank. Not only are female moviegoers expected to drive the film’s success, but according to a Fandango survey, out of 1,000 people planning to see the film, 95% are most excited about the film’s female-heavy cast – with another 93% just happy for a break from superhero flicks.
