Tom McClintock Sparks Controversy With Impeachment Hearing Voting Question

Congressman Tom McClintock raised some eyebrows during his questioning of the four constitutional law experts who appeared at Wednesday's House Intelligence Committee hearing.

McClintock, who is a Republican from California, began by asking the witnesses to declare whether they voted for Donald Trump in 2016 with a show of hands. The question was met with surprised reactions from the witnesses and other members of the committee.

The room was quiet for just a moment, then one of the witnesses, Stanford Law School professor Pamela S. Karlan, protested strongly and admonished the congressman for asking the question.

"I don't think we're obligated to say anything about how we cast our ballot," said Karlan. Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler then told the witnesses they did not have to answer the question, though McClintock was allowed to rephrase it and put it to the witnesses a second time. None of them responded.
