A banana duct-taped to a wall went on sale for a mind-blowing $120,000 at Art Basel Miami.
Sure, that price might seem steep, but another iteration has already sold for a whopping $150,000! The piece, titled Comedian, is the brainchild of Italian artist and prankster Maurizio Cattelan, 59. He used a banana purchased from a Miami supermarket. It is on display at the Galerie Perrotin pop-up in Miami Beach, Fla.
The first version of Comedian sold to a French woman for the aforementioned sum. Cattelan then completed an art world hat trick by selling two more editions one to a French man for an undisclosed amount, with another slated for sale to a museum for $150,000. Cattelan hasnt provided instructions for what to do when the pricey bananas start to rot but he does keep an extra on hand in the Art Basel booth in case of theft.
