LaVar Ball questioned President Donald Trump's involvement in getting his son and two other UCLA basketball players released from Chinese custody during a CNN interview which got combative at times.
The outspoken father of player LiAngelo Ball refuses to thank Trump for securing his son's release because he doesn't believe he did anything. Ball asked, "Did (Trump) help the boys get out? I don't know. If I was going to thank somebody, I probably would thank (China's) President Xi. He's in China. He's the president of China. I helped my son get out of China. I had some people that had boots on the ground that knew the situation."
Following their release, all three players publicly thanked President Trump for getting them out. LaVar Ball believes that since Trump didn't personally put them on his plane and fly them home, he has no reason to thank him. "I would have said 'thank you' if he put him on his plane and took him home," he said. "'Thank you, Mr. Trump, for taking my boys out of China and bringing them back to the U.S.' There's a lot of room on that plane.' I would have said, 'thank you kindly for that.'"
