"I just signed your death warrant." That's exactly what Judge Rosemarie Aquilina said just before sentencing former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University doctor Larry Nassar. The disgraced ex-coach was handed a 40 to 175-year sentence for sexually abusing women and girls.
The announcement came in a Michigan courtroom after more than 150 accusers, many of them Olympic gymnasts, were permitted to read their impact statements to Nassar.
Given an opportunity to address the court before sentencing, Nassar sobbed, “Your words these past several days have had a significant effect on myself and have shaken me to my core," adding, "I will carry your words with me for the rest of my days.”
Aquilina said it was her honor and privilege to sentence Nassar, adding, "You do not deserve to walk outside a prison again."
