Danni Messina is just a regular college student, attending Washington State University, who was looking for a way to give back.
She had no idea that "giving back" would eventually turn into a fundraising campaign worth tens of thousands of dollars.
Around Thanksgiving, Danni sent a Twitter message promising to donate 50 cents for every retweet of her message to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Seattle. That message ended up going viral and racking up hundreds of thousands of retweets, which meant Danni was on the hook for a $200,000 donation.
As is true of most 19-year-old college students, Danni didn’t have $200,000 to give. But, she didn't want to just ignore her promise to the hospital, so she started a GoFundMe page in hopes of raising at least some money to donate.
Amazingly, people have already pledged over $100,000 -- and that number could still increase. Danni says she’s “still in shock” about what happened, but is also thankful that people are donating just because they saw her tweet. And while she may not raise the full $200,000 her message should get, she also knows that $100,000 donated to charity isn't too shabby.
