A young immigrant from Mali was captured on video climbing up a four-story building in Paris to save a four-year-old child who was dangling from a balcony. Mamoudou Gassama scaled the building in seconds, rescuing the kid before emergency officials arrived as the crowd cheered him on.
Now the 22-year-old has met with French President Emmanuel Macronand was awarded a certificate and gold medal for performing an act of courage and dedication. The foreign rescuer will now be made a French citizen and the Paris fire brigade has even offered him a job.
Gassama says he was watching a football match in a local restaurant when he heard the commotion, so he ran over to see how he could help. “I didn’t think about it,” he told Macron. “I climbed up and God helped me.”
