Melania Trump on Thursday made a surprise visit to see the conditions that migrant children are being held in at the border between the U.S. and Mexico, but her visit was upstaged by one of her fashion choices.
The first lady was photographed boarding her plane to Texas wearing a jacket with the words, "I really don't care. Do U?" written on the back. This comes after her husband's administration has received criticism from Democrats and Republicans over its "zero-tolerance" immigration policy, which resulted in thousands of children being separated from their parents, who are charged with crossing the border illegally into the U.S.
Melania's jacket created an uproar on social media and TV news, prompting her communication director, Stephanie Grisham, to issue a statement that said, "It's a jacket. There was no hidden message. After today's important visit to Texas, I hope the media isn't going to choose to focus on her wardrobe." She also took to Twitter with a similar message and the hashtag "#ItsJustAJacket."
However, Donald Trump soon contradicted that statement, with his own tweet. Trump wrote, "'I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?' written on the back of Melania’s jacket, refers to the Fake News Media. Melania has learned how dishonest they are, and she truly no longer cares!" (TIME)
