Kalan Haywood, a 19-year-old student at Cardinal Stritch University, is on track to make history as the youngest state legislator in Wisconsin. In fact it’s been reported he’s could be the youngest legislator in America.
Haywood spent his teenage year preparing for this moment. At 13, he gained on the job experience working on Democratic Representative David Bowen's campaign. When he was 14, he served on the Milwaukee Youth Council and was later elected president.
Kalan beat five of his Democratic opponents during the primary elections and he didn’t even have a Republican challenger. He’s also not letting his age or lack of experience stop him from reaching the people. “My age is my biggest asset," he said, “Being young is going to play well with some people, but there will also be people who doubt me because of my age, which is fair — it’s new.”
The second-year business major will be sworn in January 2019 representing Milwaukee's 16th District. Okay! #blackexcellence.
