Central Oregon ranch owner Clare Staples says it was a miracle she was in Malibu when the Woolsey Fire broke out. She was definitely in the right place at the right time because she was able to save her horses as well as other people’s animals from the deadly blaze.
Staples owns The Skydog Sanctuary Ranch, which is a 9,000-acre safe ranch for wild horses, along with three ranches in California, where she rescues horses that were saved from at-risk situations. And when she woke up Friday as the fire approached, she was able to fill up two trailers with horses before a sheriff made her evacuate the property.
She says driving down the Pacific Coast Highway was chaos, but once she arrived at her ranch in Mariposa, she dropped off those horses and drove hours back for those remaining, not sure if they’d be alive. Thankfully, they were and Staples saved the rest of her horses, as well as other people’s animals, from the wildfire.
