Volunteer firefighters know that when duty calls, you come running ... even if you’re wearing shorts and a T-shirt. That’s how off-duty volunteer firefighter Victor Esparzawas dressed when he heard his neighbors yelling for help because their Houston area home was on fire and his instinct kicked in and he sprang into action.
Esparza ran over to the house next door and got to work trying to put out the flames. He says he grabbed a garden hose and “was just spraying and spraying,” taking a break every once in a while to step outside to get some air before going back into the fire. Soon after, the Volunteer Fire Department arrived and finished putting out the fire.
This hero has just returned from a year’s deployment with the Army National Guard in Africa, so this kind of thing comes naturally to him. Esparza says, “I love doing it because I feel good when I help somebody out.”
